Asari Dokubo Accuses Tinubu of Betrayal, Vows New Alliance
After helping Tinubu secure the presidency, Asari Dokubo says he regrets supporting Tinubu, pledges to rally with Northern leaders for future elections

Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of betrayal and neglect after supporting him in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election. In a widely circulated video, Dokubo alleged that despite spending his own money to garner votes for Tinubu, he now feels abandoned by the president.

In a pointed statement, Dokubo announced his intention to forge a new alliance with Nigeria’s Northern region, distancing himself from Tinubu and expressing disillusionment with Yoruba leadership.

“From today, I will work and form an alliance with the North. President Tinubu betrayed me after I spent all my money campaigning for him. The Tinubu I know now isn’t the Tinubu I used to know,”

Dokubo declared, stating that only Northerners can work with the Ijaw people effectively.

This shift marks a dramatic turn in Dokubo’s stance. In 2023, he had spoken glowingly of Tinubu, emphasizing their longstanding friendship from the early ’90s and dismissing any interest in federal appointments. He had assured his followers that he had full confidence in Tinubu’s leadership qualities and commitment to justice.

Now, however, Dokubo expressed regret, apologizing to Nigeria’s elders and committing to new political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
