ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike, states reason

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to initiate a nationwide strike. This decision comes in response to the Nigerian government’s failure to appoint Governing Councils for federal universities.

During a press briefing at the ASUU national secretariat in Abuja, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke expressed frustration over the absence of governing councils in all federal universities, among other unresolved issues. He emphasized that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has been given sufficient time to address the union’s demands.

The governing councils of these universities were dissolved by the government in May of last year.

Additionally, the union criticized the recent salary adjustments, specifically the 35 percent increase for professors and the 25 percent increase for other university staff, labeling these increments as a temporary wage award that could be revoked by the government at any time.
