Katsina State Police Uncover Major ATM Fraud Operations
Katsina State Police Command has taken significant action against fraud as they paraded Adewumi Gabriel, the Head of ATM Operations at a new generation bank’s Daura branch, for allegedly collaborating with a colleague to embezzle N18 million from a customer’s account.
During the investigation, Adewumi admitted to conspiring with David Mesioye, who is currently evading arrest, utilizing their insider knowledge of the bank’s systems to facilitate the theft, which came to light during an audit.
Police spokesperson Mr. Abubakar Aliyu confirmed that Adewumi was in possession of N10.18 million across various bank accounts, along with N366,900 in cash and other valuable items that were seized during the operation.
In a related case, Bishir Abdullahi, a 37-year-old from Sokoto State, was apprehended at an old generation bank ATM in Katsina while carrying 14 stolen ATM cards. Authorities have identified Abdullahi as a well-known fraudster who specialized in swiping the ATM cards of unsuspecting individuals at cash machines.
The police reported that Abdullahi’s suspicious behavior prompted a swift investigation by an officer stationed at the bank branch in Tudun Katsira quarters, leading to the discovery of the stolen cards. Initial findings indicate that the suspect had utilized these cards to fraudulently withdraw a total of N2.705 million from his victims’ accounts.
The police confirmed that Abdullahi would face legal proceedings once the investigation wraps up, underscoring their commitment to tackling financial crimes in the region.
