Bobrisky’s Allegations of Special Treatment Spark Investigations into Nigerian Correctional Service Officers
The Federal Government has suspended key officers overseeing Kirikiri Maximum and Minimum Custodial Centres in Lagos following the leak of an audio clip alleging special treatment for convicted cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky.
The audio revealed that Bobrisky, sentenced to six months in prison, was allegedly given an apartment outside the custodial centre.
The Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), Ja’afaru Ahmed, confirmed the suspensions in a statement on Thursday in Abuja. This follows the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo’s, directive to investigate the allegations.
According to Ahmed, the suspension is meant to ensure a thorough probe into the accusations, with the findings to be made public once concluded.
The affected officers include Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) for the Medium Security Custodial Centre, and Sikiru Adekunle, DCC in charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, both at Kirikiri.
In a separate case, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, serving at Afikpo Custodial Centre in Ebonyi State, was also suspended for allegedly escorting an inmate out of the facility. Additionally, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, DCC in charge of Kuje Custodial Centre, Abuja, faces suspension for allegedly accepting bribes on behalf of an inmate.
Further investigations are underway to address these violations.
