Betara, who represents the Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar Federal Constituency in Borno State, made the donation to Governor Babagana Zulum during an on-the-spot assessment of the disaster in Maiduguri on Thursday.

A member of the House of Representatives, Muktar Betara, has donated N100m to victims of the recent flood that ravaged Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The flood, which was caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, has left 37 people dead and over 400,000 displaced.

Betara, who represents the Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar Federal Constituency in Borno State, made the donation to Governor Babagana Zulum during an on-the-spot assessment of the disaster in Maiduguri on Thursday. The lawmaker expressed his grief over the loss of life and displacement of thousands of residents and commiserated with the families of the victims.

“I wish to, on behalf of myself, my family and the good people of Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar Federal Constituency, donate the sum of N100 million to support the affected people of Maiduguri,” Betara said. “I also commend Governor Zulum and his cabinet for their efforts to provide relief to those affected by the flood.”

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Director General, Mrs Zubaida Umar, revealed that 29 states and 172 local government areas have been impacted by flooding across the country, affecting 1,048,312 people and displacing 625,239 others. The flooding has also led to the death of 259 people.

Betara has pledged to bring the impact of the flood to the knowledge of the House of Representatives when it resumes from its annual vacation. He also assured that necessary intervention would be provided through relevant institutions to ensure the rehabilitation of those affected by the flood.

Ahead of the resumption of the National Assembly, Betara expressed his determination to bring the flood disaster to the floor as a matter of urgent public importance. He urged relevant authorities to provide coordinated response to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the flooding.

The flooding has also been linked to predictions made by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHS) in its annual flood outlook report. The report had predicted that 33 states and 135 local government areas would be at high risk of flooding between July and September this year.
