Former Oyo State Governor Dr. Victor Olunloyo Passes Away Days Before 90th Birthday

Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the former governor of Oyo State, has passed away just days shy of his 90th birthday, as announced by his family on Sunday. The statement, titled “Victor Olunloyo Goes Home,” was issued by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the Olunloyo family.
“With heavy hearts yet in gratitude to the Almighty, we share the news of the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Olunloyo, a distinguished mathematician, engineer, and technocrat,” the statement read. “Dr. Olunloyo held many prestigious positions, including being the first Rector of Ibadan Polytechnic and the inaugural Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic.”
The family reflected on his extensive contributions to the nation and his dedication to humanity, which bring pride to his loved ones and associates as they come to terms with this profound loss. They requested understanding from the media and the public as they prepare for a fitting farewell for the late governor.
The statement ended with a poignant note: “Even from everlasting to everlasting, He is God.”
Around a year ago, in April 2024, Dr. Olunloyo had faced rumors regarding his death, which circulated on various news platforms. However, during a visit from a correspondent at his Molete residence in Ibadan, he vigorously denied the claims, emphasizing his continued vitality with the words, “I’m still here, not yet gone.”
At that time, he expressed concern over the death rumors, questioning the nature of those spreading such news and stating, “Those breaking death news and the person presumed dead will all die one day.” He further remarked on his family’s longevity, sharing that his father passed away at the age of 42, while his mother lived to be 102. “I’m currently 89. I’ve surpassed the expected lifespan,” he noted.
The veteran politician recounted how rumors surfaced on June 7, 2022, claiming he had died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Shortly thereafter, his family released a statement to clarify that he was very much alive but facing challenges related to aging and urged Nigerians to pray for his health.
