Nigeria Customs Service to Auction Seized Fuel to Alleviate Transportation Issues During Festive Season
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced its decision to auction a total of 15,325 litres of confiscated Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, at a price of ₦400 per litre. This initiative aims to ease transportation challenges that often arise during the festive season.
Hussein Ejibunu, the National Coordinator of the service’s Operation Whirlwind, made the announcement during a press briefing held at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Lagos, on Saturday. He revealed that the seized petrol, estimated to be worth ₦27.5 million, was confiscated during operations carried out in Lagos and Ogun states.
Ejibunu also indicated that Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Customs, has given the green light for the auction, with the fuel priced at ₦10,000 for a 25-litre container. He clarified that all necessary legal and procedural conditions, including a court condemnation order, have been completed by the office of the legal adviser to enable the auction process to proceed.
“This operation, which commenced on May 27, 2024, has yielded positive outcomes,” stated Ejibunu. “The Comptroller-General has instructed our operatives to maintain their efforts until the activities of economic saboteurs in the country are fully eradicated.” He further explained, “In accordance with this directive, the CGC has authorized the auctioning of the seized petrol to the public at a rate of ₦10,000 per 25 litres. This initiative is intended to alleviate transportation difficulties during the festive season.”
