According to SERAP, the DSS officers are demanding to meet with the organization’s directors, a move that has been seen as an attempt to intimidate and harass the group.
In a move that has been met with strong opposition, the Department of State Services (DSS) has taken control of the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The development has been described by SERAP as an “unlawful occupation” in a statement released on Monday.
According to SERAP, the DSS officers are demanding to meet with the organization’s directors, a move that has been seen as an attempt to intimidate and harass the group. The organization has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter, urging him to direct the DSS to end the harassment and intimidation of Nigerians.
This latest development comes barely 24 hours after SERAP urged President Tinubu to use his leadership and authority to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to reverse the hike in the pump price of premium motor spirit, commonly known as petrol. The organization had described the hike as “seemingly illegal and unconstitutional”.
The takeover of SERAP’s office is seen as a major setback for the organization, which has been a vocal critic of government policies and actions. The development has sparked concerns about the erosion of human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.
