E-Money Urges Nigerians to Respect Currency and Avoid Illegal Cash Spraying at Parties
Businessman and socialite Emeka Okonkwo, widely known as E-Money, has publicly urged Nigerians to refrain from spraying or throwing the Naira and other currencies at parties, emphasizing that such actions are legally prohibited.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, E-Money highlighted the directive from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which explicitly states that money should not be discarded or sprayed during celebrations. He described such conduct as a form of currency abuse that violates Nigerian law.
“Let’s celebrate responsibly and avoid fines. Respect our currency!” he urged. He further advised that if one intends to give money during social events, it should be placed carefully in a basket, bowl, or container in front of the recipient, rather than dropping or scattering cash on the floor. He cautioned that ignorance of the law would not be considered a valid excuse for such misconduct.
This advisory follows reports that E-Money was recently detained and interrogated by the EFCC over alleged abuse of the Naira and U.S. Dollar during public events. The EFCC has been increasingly active in recent months, cracking down on individuals seen mishandling cash at social functions, and has consistently warned against the mutilation or reckless spraying of currency, deeming it a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
The agency’s intensified enforcement efforts underscore the importance of adhering to regulations designed to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s currency and prevent financial crimes.
