Edo State Governor Orders Immediate Freeze of State-Owned Bank Accounts
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced the immediate suspension of all state-owned bank accounts, a decision that has raised significant attention. The announcement was made via a statement released on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, who indicated that the freeze would remain in effect until further notification.
In his directive, Governor Okpebholo emphasized the necessity for commercial banks, as well as the heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), to act promptly to adhere to the order. He issued a stern warning that failure to comply would result in serious consequences for any violators, including MDAs leaders and civil servants.
“All state bank accounts with commercial banks have been frozen. Commercial banks must comply with this order and ensure that not a single naira is withdrawn from government coffers until further notice,” stated the governor. “Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies must ensure full compliance without delay.”
The governor explained that, following comprehensive investigations and reconciliations, appropriate measures would be taken to determine the future course of action. He reiterated that the freeze on accounts remains unchanged for now.
Additionally, Governor Okpebholo instructed relevant government bodies to revert the designation of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges back to its original name, the Ministry of Works. This change, which was made during the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, has now been reversed as part of Okpebholo’s reforms.
“It is inappropriate to name a government institution the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, especially considering that not a single bridge was constructed by the previous administration — not even a pedestrian bridge,” he remarked.
In the coming days, Governor Okpebholo plans to review other actions taken by the former administration and make decisions that prioritize the welfare and progress of the state.
