Enugu State Police Inspector Arrested for Alleged Murder of Traditional Musician
The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a Police Inspector who serves in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, following allegations of murdering a well-known traditional Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, also recognized by his stage name, Igbo-Jah.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the incident took place on Friday, October 25, 2024, at approximately 8:10 p.m. at the headquarters of the Tactical Squad. Reports indicate that Mba was departing the premises after a friendly visit when the police officer discharged his weapon, fatally injuring the musician.
Ndukwe stated in a press release, “A Police Inspector serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad has been arrested and placed in custody in connection with the alleged murder of Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah. The musician was reportedly leaving the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters after a visit when, under circumstances that remain unclear, the police officer fired his rifle, striking him. He was rapidly taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel. His remains have since been transferred to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”
State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the event. Ndukwe added that the Commissioner expressed condolences to Mba’s family, friends, and community, labeling the tragic incident as wholly unacceptable. He assured that the officer involved, as well as any others found responsible, would face appropriate consequences under the law to serve as a deterrent.
The Commissioner also called for calm among those connected to the victim and urged cooperation with the police to ensure a fair and just legal process.
