A 30-year-old motorcyclist, Michael Olorunfemi, has been taken into custody by the police for allegedly committing a heinous crime in Akure, the capital of Ondo State. The suspect, a father of four, was accused of raping his 17-year-old wife’s sister in a bush along the Irese Road in the Onigaari area of Akure.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on a night in August 2024, at around 10 p.m. The suspect, who has since confessed to the crime, claimed that the victim had approached him to take her to her boyfriend’s house, but instead, he stopped near a bush and carried out the reprehensible act. He allegedly promised to give her money, which he failed to do.
The victim’s family was said to have reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of the suspect. The police prosecutor, Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, revealed that the defendant had committed the offense on August 2024 at 10 p.m., in the Onigaari area of Irese Road, Akure.
The defendant was charged with rape, which contravenes Sections 357 and 358 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006. The police prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in prison custody pending advice from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The trial Chief Magistrate, Kolawole Aro, has ordered that the defendant be remanded in Olokuta prison and that the case file be transferred to the DPP for advice. The case has been adjourned till October 31, 2024, for review.
