INEC Reports Fire Incident at Delta State Office, Significant Materials Destroyed
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported a significant fire incident at its office located in the Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State. The Commission disclosed the details via a post on its official X account on Tuesday.
According to the statement, approximately 706 ballot boxes, 50 election bags, 322 apron vests, and various other materials were consumed by the fire. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Delta State, Mr. Etekamba Udo Umoren, provided confirmation of the event in a report highlighting the incident.
The incident reportedly took place on Monday afternoon and was triggered by a sudden power surge that followed the restoration of public electricity. The storage area, where petrol generators and other equipment were kept, suffered considerable damage, being completely engulfed in flames.
The destruction included not only the ballot boxes but also three electric power generators, 140 stamps, 50 seals for ballot boxes, among assorted items such as envelopes, posters, forms, and booklets. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities stemming from the fire.
In response to the incident, INEC has reached out to security agencies and emergency services to carry out a comprehensive investigation. The Commission expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force and the Delta State Fire Service for their prompt response to the situation.
