In a rare display of solidarity with the Nigerian people, members of the House of Representatives have agreed to reduce their salaries by 50% for the next six months. The decision was taken as a gesture of sacrifice and support for the country’s citizens who are currently facing economic hardship and hunger.
The decision was reached following the adoption of an amendment to a motion moved by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu. The amendment was part of a motion introduced by Rep Isiaka Ayokunle, which called on proponents of planned nationwide protests to engage with the government in dialogue rather than resorting to street actions.
According to sources, the 360 lawmakers will be sacrificing a total of N108 million monthly by reducing their N600,000 monthly salaries by 50%. The funds will be used to support the federal government’s efforts to address the rising cost of foodstuff in the country and alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
The motion was referred to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for compliance. The lawmakers’ decision is seen as a rare example of public servants putting their money where their mouth is and demonstrating empathy for the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
The move is expected to send a positive signal that lawmakers are willing to make sacrifices to support the country’s economic recovery and improve living standards for citizens.
