Federal Government Announces Tough Measures Against Irregular Migrants Set for August 2025
In a significant move to address the issue of irregular migration, the Federal Government has revealed plans to implement stringent actions starting August 1, 2025. To facilitate compliance, a three-month grace period will be introduced, running from May 1 to August 1, during which the newly established Expatriate Administration System will be set up prior to enforcement.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a recent meeting with representatives from the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association in Abuja.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted that there will be an immigration amnesty program spanning three months, designed to assist migrants in regularising their status. He emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy for companies that obstruct the Nigeria Immigration Service in fulfilling its responsibilities.
“The era when companies could irresponsibly evade immigration regulations is over,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo asserted. He insisted that the private sector must recognize the authority of the Immigration Service and allow them to perform their duties without hindrance. “Any organization attempting to impede the work of immigration officials will face strict penalties,” he warned.
The minister also addressed concerns regarding fees associated with immigration services, indicating that the current charges are unsustainable. “We have reviewed the fees due to the need for adjustments in relation to citizenship applications and business operations. After discussions, we have arrived at a compromise, and the final fee structure will soon be officially released, with signatures from both the ministry and NECA.”
He further detailed that the revised fee structure and administration system would come into effect on May 1, 2025, during which the immigration amnesty program will run until July 31, allowing migrants an opportunity to regularize their immigration status. However, stringent enforcement against irregular migrants will commence on August 1, 2025.
The minister urged all affected individuals to utilize this grace period to ensure they are in compliance with immigration regulations.
