Senator Rufai Hanga, representing the Kano Central Senatorial District, has made a significant donation of 500,000 pieces of white fabric and 500,000 clay pots to his constituents. The purpose of this donation, according to reports, is to assist with the burial process for loved ones, addressing the frequent requests for burial assistance from constituents.
According to Premium Times, Dawuud Auwal, a social media aide to Senator Hanga, made the announcement of the donations on Facebook. He noted that the requests for burial assistance, including funds for purchasing white cloths and clay pots, are common among the constituents. Senator Hanga, an accountant who has been representing Kano Central since 2023 under the New Nigeria Peoples Party, has responded to these requests with this generous gesture.
The senator’s donation aligns with the traditional Muslim burial customs observed in the Northern region, where white fabric is used to wrap the deceased, followed by the placement of broken clay pots as an initial covering before burial in sand.
While the donation has received positive feedback, it has also sparked some criticism on social media platforms. One pro-Hausa organization criticized the senator for allocating resources to burial assistance instead of investing in healthcare infrastructure. Additionally, some Twitter users questioned the rationale behind the donation, particularly in the face of prevailing economic challenges such as hunger, hardship, and unemployment.
Despite the mixed reactions, it remains unclear whether Senator Hanga’s initiative was part of his official constituency project or a personal contribution to the community.
