Gunmen Kill Omoku Youth Leader, Aide in Rivers Attack

Gunmen suspected to be members of a cult group have killed two people, including the President of the Omoku Youth Federation, Comrade Ifeanyi Azuazu, in an attack that has left residents of Omoku in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State in shock.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening, February 5, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m. at a relaxation spot located on Ogolo Street, off Palace Road, in the ONELGA headquarters.

According to eyewitnesses, about seven armed men arrived in two vehicles and moved directly toward Azuazu. The attackers reportedly threatened him with firearms and forced him into one of their vehicles.

During the confrontation, Chigozie Oluwu — identified by residents as the youth leader’s aide — was shot and killed while trying to stop the abduction. The assailants then fled the scene with Azuazu, causing panic in the neighbourhood as people ran for safety and nearby shops shut down.

The situation took a tragic turn on Friday when local security operatives confirmed the discovery of Azuazu’s body in a forested area of Omoku. The ONELGA Security and Planning Advisory Committee (OSPAC) said the remains were found several hours after the abduction.

OSPAC spokesperson Godnews Nkem stated that community security personnel, working with other local networks, located the body on Friday afternoon. He confirmed that Oluwu died at the scene of the attack, while Azuazu was taken away alive and later killed by his abductors.

Nkem condemned the killing and appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that security agencies had begun investigations. He said the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant authorities are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The attack has heightened anxiety among residents of Omoku, with many calling for stronger security measures to prevent further violence in the area. Community members described the incident as a serious setback to ongoing efforts to maintain peace.

Attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Rivers State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report, although Police Public Relations Officer CSP Grace Iringe-Koko indicated that details would be provided later.

The killing has increased tension in Omoku and nearby communities, with residents urging authorities to act quickly to address cult-related violence and restore public confidence in security.
