A shocking incident has unfolded in Lagos, Nigeria, as a 28-year-old labourer, Uchenna Eziekwe, and his 22-year-old wife, Chineye, were arrested for attempting to sell their two-year-old son at the Isolo General Hospital.
The couple, who were taken into custody on July 9, had allegedly planned to use the money from the sale of their child to fund Eziekwe’s travel to Canada in search of better economic opportunities. According to police sources, the couple’s decision was motivated by their struggles to make ends meet in a harsh economic environment.
In a candid interview with journalists, Eziekwe acknowledged that the decision was a difficult one, but claimed it was made out of necessity. “We felt it would be better to sell our baby to someone who can take care of him than to allow him to suffer due to our inability to provide for him,” he said.
Eziekwe revealed that he had been struggling to make a living as a labourer, while his wife was not employed. He explained that they had considered various options before deciding to sell their child, but ultimately felt it was the only way to ensure their son’s survival.
The police have launched an investigation into the matter, and authorities are working to reunite the child with his parents while also addressing the circumstances that led to their desperate decision. The incident has sparked outrage and concern about the economic struggles faced by many families in Nigeria.
