Lagos State Government Secures €120m for Waste-to-Energy Initiative

Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has announced the acquisition of a €120 million funding package from the Dutch government aimed at advancing its waste-to-energy project in collaboration with the Dutch firm, Harvest Waste Consortium. The details were shared by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a recent post on X.com.

Wahab highlighted that this initiative is designed to convert a portion of the city’s waste into electricity, utilizing the decommissioned Epe landfill to process between 2,500 and 3,000 tons of waste daily, out of the approximate 13,000 to 14,000 tons generated in Lagos each day.

He noted, “The partnership with Harvest Waste is significantly supported by the Dutch government, providing around €120 million for this endeavor. We have earmarked the decommissioned Epe landfill for its implementation.”

Lagos State Government Decommissions Landfills

The commissioner further revealed that the government is in the process of decommissioning several landfills to make way for new waste management initiatives involving foreign private enterprises, including collaborations with the Jospong Group and Closing the Loop.

Major dumpsites such as Olusosun and Solous 1, 2, and 3 are currently undergoing advanced stages of decommissioning, with plans for new landfills to facilitate these projects. “When these partnerships are fully operational, we anticipate that only 3% to 4% of the waste generated in Lagos will go to landfills. This aligns with the state’s vision of transforming waste into valuable resources and enhancing sustainability,” Wahab added.

In a related effort, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) announced last year its partnership with C40 and G-ORBIT Enterprise to develop a feasibility study focused on converting organic waste from markets into biogas for electricity generation. As shared on X in October 2023, the agency emphasized its commitment to exploring innovative waste-to-energy solutions.
