Paul Onwuanibe, the CEO of Landmark Group, expressed his excitement about the initiative, emphasizing the company’s commitment to creating unforgettable leisure experiences.

“This project isn’t just about reviving a historic resort; it’s about creating a legacy that showcases the best of Rivers State while driving socio-economic growth,”

Onwuanibe stated.

The revamped resort is expected to serve as a key driver of economic activity in the state, generating direct and indirect employment opportunities, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and boosting internally generated revenue (IGR) for Rivers State.

The Legacy of Landmark Beach Resort in Lagos

Landmark Group is no stranger to creating iconic tourism destinations. The company previously developed Landmark Beach Resort in Lagos, a premium waterfront destination that redefined leisure and hospitality in Nigeria. Before its controversial demolition in April 2024, Landmark Beach attracted thousands of visitors annually and contributed significantly to the local economy.

The demolition of Landmark Beach Resort, which Onwuanibe described as a “catalyst for our diversification strategy,” led to an estimated $80 million loss. Despite this setback, the company remains resolute in its mission to expand across Africa.

The demolition also stirred controversy, with Onwuanibe criticizing changes to the Coastal Road project that impacted the resort. He disclosed that Landmark Africa had not received compensation for the demolition, even though other affected properties reportedly did.

Building the Future of African Tourism

The Port Harcourt Tourist Beach redevelopment is part of Landmark Group’s broader vision to create a network of iconic leisure destinations across West Africa. Onwuanibe disclosed that after receiving interest from governors in 12 Nigerian states, the company selected three for new projects, including Rivers State.

“Our goal is to create destinations that are not just for leisure but also drivers of socio-economic growth,” Onwuanibe said. “We aim to position Africa as a leading global tourism hub, leveraging the untapped potential of its diverse landscapes and cultures.”

The Port Harcourt project will include luxury hotels, entertainment hubs, water sports facilities, fine dining options, and cultural attractions. It is designed to cater to both domestic and international tourists, establishing Port Harcourt as a must-visit destination in Africa.

Government Support and Local Impact

Dr. Israel Lebura Ngbuelo, Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, expressed his full support for the project, emphasizing its potential to transform the state’s tourism sector.

“This project will not only enhance the state’s global image but also generate economic benefits that will uplift our people,” he said.

The resort will also play a significant role in supporting the local supply chain, fostering the growth of SMEs, and creating thousands of jobs across various sectors.

A New Era for Landmark Group

As Landmark Group prepares to relocate its Nigerian headquarters from Lagos, it is doubling down on its commitment to redefine tourism across Africa. The company’s vision for the Port Harcourt Tourist Beach aligns with its broader mission to establish sustainable, world-class leisure destinations.

The redevelopment of Port Harcourt Tourist Beach is poised to become a shining example of what can be achieved through strategic partnerships and bold vision. It signals a new era of growth for Landmark Group and a brighter future for tourism in Rivers State and beyond.
