Court Sentences Lecturer to Life Imprisonment for Raping Student Inside Campus Office

An Ikeja Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court has sentenced Kolawole Muyiwa, a former part-time lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (now Lagos State University of Education), to life imprisonment for raping a student.

Justice Rahman Oshodi ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, emphasizing that the lecturer abused his position of trust and authority.

Court’s Verdict

Delivering judgment, Justice Oshodi found Muyiwa guilty under Section 260 of the Lagos State Criminal Law (2015), which prescribes life imprisonment for rape.

“I note that you are a first-time offender, married with three children, and have no prior criminal record. However, the gravity of your offense cannot be overlooked. As a lecturer, you held a position of trust, which you abused,”

the judge stated.

He further ordered that Muyiwa be registered as a sex offender.

Survivor’s Testimony

The survivor recounted that on October 11, 2021, she arrived early for a departmental meeting when Muyiwa approached her and requested she buy him food. She declined due to her pending meeting.

However, when she followed him to collect a flask for the food, he led her into his office, locked the doors, and attacked her.

“He pushed me onto the plastic chair, overpowered me, and forcefully removed my trousers. I was menstruating, but he took off my sanitary pad and raped me,”

she testified.

She added that after the assault, Muyiwa told her, ‘What you refused to give me willingly, I have taken by force.’

During the trial, Muyiwa denied raping the student, claiming he only asked her for a platonic relationship. His counsel, Dr. G.O. Erenta, argued that the survivor’s testimony was uncorroborated and should be dismissed.

However, the judge ruled that the survivor’s account was consistent and supported by evidence from the investigating police officer and a legal practitioner.

With this verdict, Kolawole Muyiwa will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
