NAFDAC Issues Recall of Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on Deodorant Amid Health Concerns
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a recall of the Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml, which is marketed as offering 48-hour protection in African climates. This decision follows a warning from the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products in Brussels.
In a statement released on Thursday, NAFDAC identified the batch number of the recalled product as 93529610. The agency highlighted that this specific Nivea deodorant contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde, a chemical that is banned in cosmetic products due to its potential health risks, including reproductive harm, adverse effects on unborn children, and the possibility of skin irritation or burns for users.
Manufactured in Germany, the product bears the Bar Code Number 42299882. NAFDAC has urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to be vigilant and cautious throughout the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and usage of the affected roll-on deodorant.
Consumers and retailers who possess the compromised batch are advised to stop its sale and use immediately and to return any stock to their nearest NAFDAC office. Additionally, healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse reactions linked to the use of regulated products to NAFDAC via their pharmacovigilance email at [email protected], through the E-reporting platforms accessible on their website at www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med-safety application, available for download on both Android and iOS devices.
