Naira abuse: EFCC arrests man for spraying N200 notes

The Gombe Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Zachariyya Muhammad for alleged naira abuse. According to a statement released by the EFCC on X.com on Wednesday, Muhammad was apprehended after a video surfaced showing him dancing and spraying N200 notes.

Upon his arrest on Saturday, May 25, 2024, Muhammad was confronted with the video, which he confirmed featured him. The EFCC’s statement noted, “Muhammad was arrested based on intelligence linking him to the alleged spraying of Naira notes at G-Connect in Tunfure, Gombe State. He admitted to being the person in the video.”

The EFCC has announced that Muhammad will face charges in court following the completion of their investigation. This arrest is part of the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to crack down on the abuse of the naira, as the spraying and mishandling of banknotes are illegal under Nigerian law.

In related news, the EFCC arrested Janty Emmanuel for spraying Naira notes at a social event, which she also admitted to. Additionally, in April 2024, the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months in prison for similar offenses involving the naira.
