Second National Grid Failure in 24 Hours Affecting Millions as System Failures Raise Concerns Over Nigeria’s Electricity Stability
Nigeria’s national power grid has suffered yet another collapse, marking the second outage within 24 hours. The latest breakdown occurred at approximately 9:17 AM on Tuesday, disrupting electricity supply across several regions of the country.
Confirming the incident, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) announced the collapse on their X (formerly Twitter) account: “Dear Valued Customer, Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 09:17hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are working with our partners to ensure speedy restoration of the grid and will keep you updated.”
This back-to-back grid collapse follows Monday’s failure, which was recorded at 7 PM when electricity transmission on the grid dropped to zero megawatts, according to data from the Independent System Operator (ISO). The power output had earlier stood at 3,566 megawatts before the sudden plunge, cutting off supply to Nigeria’s 11 electricity distribution companies.
Efforts are underway to restore power, though the repeated outages have raised concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.
