Naval Officer Loses Life in Heroic Bid to Save 59 Drowning Crew Members in Rivers State

A tragic accident has occurred during a rescue operation in River State, claiming the life of Lieutenant-Commander Gideon Gwaza, Base Operations Nigerian Naval officer Forward Operating Base in Bonny.

The Naval officer’s bravery ultimately proved fatal, as he lost his life while risking his own to save others.

The rescue operation was conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, following a distress call from the dredging vessel MV AMBIKA 4, which was on the brink of sinking while operating at the Okpobo Field, near the Okpobo River. The vessel had 59 crew members on board, who were rescued after a 10-hour operation that spanned from midnight on July 29 to 30, 2024.

The rescue team, led by Lieutenant-Commander Gwaza, comprising 10 armed personnel in two interceptor boats, faced challenging conditions due to strong waves. Additional reinforcements were deployed, including a squadron of three boats, Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, Nigerian Navy helicopters, and a Nigerian Air Force helicopter. Despite the challenges, all 59 crew members were successfully rescued.

However, Lieutenant-Commander Gwaza’s life was tragically cut short when he accidentally fell overboard during the operation. His death serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and sacrifices made by Nigerian Navy personnel to ensure the safety of Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, paid tribute to the late officer, describing him as a well-trained combat diver who will be remembered for his dedication and sacrifice. “His ultimate price was paid for his bravery and selflessness,” Adams-Aliu said. The Nigerian Navy deeply mourns the loss of Lieutenant-Commander Gwaza and extends its condolences to his family and loved ones.
