NDLEA Moves to New Headquarters in Jahi, Abuja

ABUJA – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has officially transitioned to its new headquarters located in Jahi, Abuja, a significant step in the agency’s development. The facility, which is still in the process of being completed, marks the initial phase of the agency’s national headquarters initiative and was inaugurated during an interdenominational service held on Wednesday, November 26, 2024.

Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the Chairman and CEO of the NDLEA, characterized the relocation as a pivotal moment in the agency’s evolution into a contemporary, results-oriented organization. “This move is part of the recalibration of NDLEA that commenced in January 2021,” Marwa explained.

While the facility is not yet fully finished, Marwa highlighted its operational readiness and the necessity for the agency to accommodate its growing workforce. “The previous headquarters in Gimbiya, Garki, could no longer satisfy our requirements due to the expansion of our operations and personnel. The new headquarters allows for better organization and efficiency among our directorates,” he stated.

Marwa expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support, which has empowered the agency in fulfilling its mission. He also recognized the contributions of international partners, the National Assembly, the judiciary, and the general public. “This support not only acknowledges our endeavors but also motivates us to accomplish even more. I am confident that this new setting will drive greater successes,” Marwa remarked.

He acknowledged his predecessor for laying the groundwork for securing a suitable headquarters for the agency.

NDLEA Secretary Shadrach Haruna praised Marwa’s transformative leadership, noting several significant achievements since 2021, including:

  • A rise in staff size from 5,000 to 15,000
  • The distribution of allowances, including benefits for the families of deceased officers
  • Amendments to the agency’s enabling legislation
  • Enhanced professionalism, capability, and recognition on a global scale

Relocation Insights and Upcoming Developments

The former office in Gimbiya, Garki is set to function as an annex to the new headquarters, while additional phases of the project are slated for completion in 2025, pending further budget allocations. The inauguration event featured prayers from both Christian and Islamic leaders for President Tinubu and the country as a whole, along with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to celebrate the occasion.

“This relocation signifies the beginning of a new chapter for the NDLEA. Together, we must maintain our determination in the battle against drug cartels,” Marwa urged his staff.
