NECO Releases 2024 SSCE External Results: Performance Up, Malpractice Down
Minna, Nigeria – The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the results of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, revealing a notable improvement in student performance and a significant decline in examination malpractice cases. Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, unveiled the findings at a press conference held at the council’s headquarters in Minna on Friday.
A total of 86,067 candidates registered for the examination, which took place between November 14 and December 14, 2024. Of those registered, 84,799 candidates participated in the examination. According to Wushishi, the results indicate a positive trend in academic achievement. A commendable 67.35%, representing 57,114 candidates, secured credits in five or more subjects, including the crucial subjects of English Language and Mathematics.
Breaking down the demographics of the candidates, 44,988 (52.27%) were male, while 41,079 (47.72%) were female among those who registered. Of the candidates who sat for the examination, 44,277 (52.21%) were male and 40,522 (47.78%) were female.
In terms of subject-specific performance, 83,220 candidates took the English Language examination, with an impressive 75.62% (62,929 candidates) achieving a credit or higher. Mathematics saw even greater success, with 93.93% (77,988 candidates) of the 83,024 test-takers securing a credit or better.
Furthermore, the Registrar highlighted that a significant proportion of candidates achieved overall success. He stated that 83.39%, or 70,711 candidates, obtained credits in five or more subjects, regardless of their performance in English Language and Mathematics.
Beyond academic performance, NECO reported a considerable reduction in examination malpractice. The number of candidates implicated in various forms of malpractice fell to 6,160, a substantial 27.7% decrease compared to the 8,518 cases recorded in 2023. This decline suggests the effectiveness of NECO’s measures to curb examination irregularities.
In response to malpractice incidents, NECO has taken decisive action. Seven supervisors, including two each from Oyo and Ogun States and one each from Lagos, Cross River, and Ebonyi States, have been recommended for blacklisting due to negligence, tardiness, and complicity in facilitating malpractice during the examination. Additionally, fourteen centers, with 10 located in Ogun State and 4 in Oyo State, have been blacklisted for widespread malpractice across nine subjects.
Prof. Wushishi announced that candidates can now conveniently access their 2024 SSCE External results through the official NECO website, www.neco.gov.ng, using their examination registration number.
The Registrar concluded by expressing his sincere appreciation to the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, and other stakeholders for their consistent support and guidance throughout the examination process, which contributed to its successful completion.
