Federal Polytechnic Nekede Suspends Facilitator After Viral Assault Video
The Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, Imo State, has suspended a facilitator, Mr. Okoroafor Ifeanyichukwu, following the emergence of a viral video that captured him assaulting a male student. The suspension, communicated via a letter dated March 14, 2025, with reference number FPN/TEDC/80/1, stated, “You are hereby suspended from duty as a facilitator in the Technical and Entrepreneurship Development Centre pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident that occurred on March 13, 2025, during your entrepreneurship training.”
The letter, signed by Dr. Okoye P.C., the Director of the Technical and Entrepreneurship Development Centre, was also circulated to the Rector, the Dean of Student Affairs, and the Student Union Government.
Footage that surfaced late Thursday depicted Mr. Ifeanyichukwu slapping a student named Chidera and subsequently kicking him, causing Chidera to fall hard against a cement walkway, damaging his phone in the process. The facilitator was seen walking away after the incident.
The video elicited significant backlash on social media. In response, Mr. Ifeanyichukwu sent an apology to Chidera, expressing deep remorse for his conduct. “Dear Chidera, I am writing to extend my sincerest apologies for my actions towards you. I regret the way I treated you and acknowledge that my behavior was both unacceptable and harmful. As your instructor, it was my responsibility to foster a safe and supportive learning environment, but I failed in that regard by resorting to bullying and intimidation,” the apology reads.
He continued, “My actions were unprofessional and have caused you distress. I fully accept responsibility for what happened and sincerely regret the pain I caused you. While my apology cannot undo the past, I hope it can be a first step toward reconciliation.”
Mr. Ifeanyichukwu assured Chidera that he is committed to changing his behavior so that all students feel safe and respected in the classroom. He expressed a desire to meet with Chidera to discuss ways to make amends and support him in any possible manner.
The suspension letter was widely shared on social media, garnering praise for the institution’s prompt response, though some individuals raised concerns about the absence of a fair hearing in the matter.
