FG to Launch New Satellite, NigComSat-2, to Boost Economy

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to launch a new satellite, NigComSat-2, which is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economy.

The satellite will be used for a wide range of applications, including broadband internet, telemedicine, and e-learning, among others.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd, NIGCOMSAT, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, revealed that the government is committed to launching the new satellite, which will not only enhance the country’s space capabilities but also drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.

Although the timeline for the launch has not been disclosed, Egerton-Idehen assured that it will happen soon. The satellite will significantly enhance NIGCOMSAT’s capacity to deliver robust communication services across Nigeria and beyond.

Nigeria’s satellite journey has been marked by challenges, including the failure of its first satellite, NigComSat-1, which was launched in 2007. However, the country is now moving forward with plans to launch a new satellite.

The new satellite will be used to support critical sectors such as agriculture, security, health, and education, driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for Nigerians. The satellite will also enable NIGCOMSAT to better serve these sectors, leveraging its capacity to deliver high-speed communication services.

The launch of NigComSat-2 is seen as a major step towards strengthening Nigeria’s broadcast operations, boosting broadband development, and enhancing national security. It is also expected to help the country in monitoring and tracking railway, sea and air haulages on different routes.

In an interview, Egerton-Idehen expressed gratitude to the media for their continued partnership and support in promoting the company’s activities and the broader satellite communication industry. She emphasized the critical role the media plays in shaping public perception, driving awareness, and educating the public on issues impacting Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

Despite the challenges faced by Nigeria’s satellite industry in the past, the country is now moving forward with renewed vigor and commitment to using satellite technology to stabilize its economy. The launch of NigComSat-2 is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
