The announcement was made by Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, the Permanent Secretary for Innovation, Science and Technology, during a courtesy visit from officials of the Russian Embassy, led by Senior Counselor Sergei Pliushchov, in Abuja. Asanye emphasized that scientific progress cannot occur in isolation and that international cooperation is essential for nations to thrive.

During the meeting, Asanye expressed the Nigerian Ministry’s interest in facilitating scientific training and research opportunities in Russia, particularly in the domain of Space Technology, contingent on sponsorship from the Russian government. She acknowledged Russia’s proactive approach in responding positively to Nigeria’s training requests, reflecting the country’s commitment to Nigeria’s development.

Pliushchov, representing the Russian Embassy, conveyed Russia’s readiness to assist Nigeria in the training and retraining of scientific professionals to enhance productivity across various sectors. He highlighted ongoing efforts to engage Russian online experts who will contribute to developing technical skills among Nigerians.

In a related context, President Bola Tinubu recently urged the Nigerian legislature to prioritize increased funding and reforms for the country’s space program.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in Abuja, represented by Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology Uche Nnaji, Tinubu emphasized the significance of a well-funded and equipped space sector in fostering national development and positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s space industry. He called for robust legislative support to enable Nigeria to fully participate in the fourth industrial revolution and enhance its role in global space exploration.
