NOA Launches Nationwide Birth Registration Drive for Children Aged 0–5
Abuja – The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced the commencement of a countrywide social mobilization initiative aimed at ensuring the birth registration of every child in Nigeria. This drive is designed to guarantee that children can access vital services such as education, healthcare, and social protection.
During a recent briefing, NOA Director General Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by David Akoji, Director of Special Duties and States Operations, emphasized the agency’s commitment to registering children between the ages of 0–5 years. As part of this initiative, children will also be issued a National Identification Number (NIN) at no cost.
Issa-Onilu stated, “NOA, in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF, is launching a nationwide campaign to boost birth registration. Our goal is to ensure that every child in Nigeria has access to essential services, encompassing education, healthcare, and social protection. We are specifically targeting the registration of children aged 0 to 5 years, along with providing them with a NIN free of charge.”
He underscored the significance of birth registration as a fundamental right for every child, highlighting that this initiative not only acknowledges a child’s existence legally but also safeguards their rights. Accurate birth registration, according to Issa-Onilu, is crucial for national planning and development, as it supplies vital data for public services like education and healthcare. Additionally, registering a child’s birth fortifies their recognition by the state, thereby protecting them against abuse, exploitation, and the risk of statelessness.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit the nearest NPC registration center to register their children, a process described as straightforward, free, and requiring only minimal supporting documentation such as an immunization card or an existing birth certificate.
As part of the initiative, every child aged 0-5 years will receive a NIN upon successful registration and face capturing. The NOA calls upon all parents, guardians, and community leaders to actively participate in this essential effort. “Together, let’s ensure every child in Nigeria is given the best possible start in life,” Issa-Onilu urged.
The birth registration campaign, which commenced in August, is set to continue until November 2024. This presents a crucial opportunity for communities to secure vital services for their children.
