Nigerian powerlifter Onyinyechi Mark has made history at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, securing Nigeria’s first gold medal with a record-breaking performance.
The 23-year-old outshone competitors China’s Cui Jianjin, who won silver with a 140kg lift, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who took bronze with a 130kg lift. Competing in the women’s 61kg division, Mark set a new world record with an incredible 150kg lift, surpassing the previous record held by fellow Nigerian, Lucy Ejike.
Mark’s achievement continues Nigeria’s proud legacy in the Paralympics, particularly in powerlifting, where athletes such as Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo have previously set world records.
Nigeria’s athletes have been consistent powerhouses in the Paralympics, with a strong track record in both powerlifting and track events. The country previously won ten medals, including four golds, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, solidifying their status as one of the top nations in Paralympic powerlifting.
