Osun State Government Announces New Minimum Wage for Civil Servants
The Osun State Government has declared that the implementation of the newly approved minimum wage of N75,554.20 for civil servants will begin on December 1, 2024. This announcement follows successful negotiations between the state government and organized labor unions.
In a significant move, the government has also approved an across-the-board addition of N25,000 for all pensioners, with arrears corresponding to the new minimum wage to be disbursed alongside the November salaries for workers.
During the formal signing of the wage agreement, Osun’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, emphasized the commitment of Governor Ademola Adeleke to cultivating a motivated and satisfied workforce. He stated, “This development demonstrates the Adeleke administration’s determination to maintain a happy labor force and prioritize the welfare of workers and retirees alike.”
The event was attended by the state chairmen of the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abimbola Fasasi and Christopher Arapasopo. Osun’s Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, praised Governor Adeleke’s compassionate leadership, highlighting that it surpassed expectations in addressing labor-related matters. “The governor has shown empathy and responsibility in addressing labor-related issues. We urge workers to reciprocate by delivering quality service and enhancing productivity across the state,” Adewusi remarked.
A circular dated November 29, 2024, and signed by the Head of Service, Ayanleye Aina, provided additional details regarding the implementation of the new pay structure. It noted, “In addition, the Governor has generously approved an improved pension package of ₦25,000 for all pensioners in the state. This decision reflects the government’s consideration for the plight of our senior citizens and its commitment to resolving all outstanding issues affecting pensioners.”
The document emphasized that the wage increase resulted from “exhaustive negotiations and deliberations” involving the government and labor unions, taking into account critical factors like revenue availability, debt obligations, sustainability, and the continued growth of Osun State.
According to the circular, “The effective date for the new minimum wage is December 1, 2024, with one month’s arrears to be paid. Other salary structures within the public service will be addressed in due course.”
The government has urged all public servants, including local government employees, to show their appreciation for the governor’s gesture by improving service delivery and enhancing revenue generation. “All public servants are encouraged to work with renewed vigor, agility, and dedication to improve service delivery and contribute to the ongoing development of Osun State,” the circular concluded.
