Nigeria Police Force Resumes Issuance of Tinted Glass Permits to Enhance Security and Address Public Concerns
The Nigeria Police Force has officially resumed the issuance of permits for tinted vehicle windows across the country, following directives issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. This announcement was made through a statement released on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
According to Adejobi, the decision to reactivate the permit system responds to increasing public complaints about harassment by law enforcement officers targeting vehicle owners with factory-fitted tinted windows. The new permit process is now accessible via a secure, user-friendly digital platform hosted at https://possap.gov.ng.
He explained that the initiative aims to establish a transparent and accountable procedure for legalizing tinted windows, which are increasingly common in modern vehicles for comfort and aesthetic purposes. Adejobi emphasized that factory-tinted windows are often exploited by criminals, facilitating activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, ‘one-chance’ scams, and other banditry-related crimes. This misuse hampers police visibility, complicates investigations, and poses significant threats to public safety and national security.
The reintroduction of the permit system is designed to distinguish legitimate users—such as individuals with medical needs or members of security agencies—from those who might misuse tinted windows for unlawful purposes. Adejobi highlighted that the new digital permits are embedded with QR codes and will be processed within a maximum of 72 hours, ensuring efficiency and authenticity. The system incorporates identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), along with biometric data and background checks to bolster security.
To facilitate a smooth transition, a 30-day grace period was announced, effective from May 1, 2025. During this time, motorists are encouraged to apply for permits online, with enforcement scheduled to commence immediately after the grace period ends. The police also cautioned that officers found engaging in misconduct—such as extortion or harassment—during enforcement will face disciplinary action.
Adejobi assured the public that the Nigeria Police is committed to modern, transparent policing, emphasizing that strict measures are in place to prevent abuse of enforcement powers. He reiterated the Force’s dedication to integrating technology into policing strategies to foster accountability, improve public trust, and enhance road safety.
The Inspector-General of Police also called on Nigerians to embrace the new permit system, viewing it as a vital step towards safer roads and a more secure nation. The police leadership stressed that public cooperation is essential for the success of this initiative, which aims to strike a balance between respecting legitimate use of tinted windows and curbing their exploitation for criminal activities.
