A remarkable success story has emerged from the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as Ugwu Augustus, a former pure water seller, has secured a full scholarship into university after achieving an impressive score of 309.
Augustus, who had left school two years prior, was encouraged by Alex Onyia, the founder of Educare, to join their UTME preparatory class with the promise of a scholarship if he scored above 300.
Onyia shared the inspiring tale on his X, noting that Augustus diligently attended classes while continuing to sell pure water on the streets. Augustus’s determination paid off when the UTME results were released, revealing his aggregate score of 309. As a result, he has been enrolled in Educare’s full scholarship program and is set to rewrite his WAEC exams.
Describing Augustus’s commitment to his studies, Onyia highlighted how he often stayed back after class to assist classmates with their understanding of the material. Augustus even formed a study group with fellow students, coaching them on weekends, resulting in high scores for all members.
Augustus’s success story stands out amidst difficult circumstances as a pure water seller and the disappointing overall performance in this year’s UTME, where 77 percent of candidates scored less than 200. Another noteworthy achievement came from 15-year-old Olukayode Olusola, a student from Government Secondary School in Kwara State, who scored 362 marks, including an impressive 95 in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, and 77 in English Language. Olusola aspires to pursue a degree in Electrical Electronics at the University of Ilorin.
