Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima Returns from UN General Assembly, Calls for Debt Forgiveness
Abuja – Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA. The high-level annual event brought together world leaders to discuss pressing global issues and forge stronger international partnerships.
According to a statement by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima delivered Nigeria’s National Statement at the General Debate, emphasizing the importance of cooperation among member states. He also engaged in bilateral meetings and various sideline events, further strengthening Nigeria’s ties with other nations.
During the General Debate, President Tinubu called on world leaders to prioritize debt forgiveness for developing countries, including Nigeria, from creditors and multilateral financial institutions. He also urged the United Nations to commit to multilateralism, fostering deeper relationships among member states built on principles of inclusivity, equality, and cooperation.
As Chairman of the Authority of Heads of States and Government of the Economic Community of West African States, President Tinubu emphasized that countries in the global South cannot achieve meaningful economic progress without special concessions and a review of their current debt burden.
In addition to his address at the UNGA, Shettima attended a high-level meeting of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), reiterating the importance of solidarity among member states facing numerous global challenges. He emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to the organization’s goals while addressing pressing national concerns.
Following his return to Abuja, Shettima will join President Tinubu to mark events commemorating Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.
