A final-year student at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, identified as Favour Ugwuka, has reportedly died by suicide. Sources indicate that Miss Favour ended her life in her hostel at the Ishieke Campus of the university in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Investigations revealed that the deceased, a student in the Department of English, had passed all her courses except one, which she had failed repeatedly. Allegedly, the lecturer of this course had vowed that she would never pass it.
In a distressing video circulating online, a woman identified as Favour’s mother blamed the lecturer for her daughter’s death. She lamented, “Dr. Enyi (Favour Ugwuka’s lecture) said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter now has committed suicide.”
Rex Nwome, a graduate of the institution, corroborated the claim, stating that Favour was his classmate and close friend. He asserted that the lecturer had vowed to prevent Favour from graduating. “Favour had to pay an additional year’s tuition fee to retake the course, but she failed the course again. Her depression intensified after the latest NYSC list was released and her name was not on it,” he explained.
Nwome added, “Favour wandered around the university seeking help, desperate to graduate and serve. This prolonged struggle led to her suicide. I wish she hadn’t taken this drastic step. Rest in peace, Ugwuka Favour, until we meet again.”
The Incident was confirmed by the Ebonyi State Police Command on Thursday. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated, “Yes, the command received a report of suicide by a female student.”
Attempts to get a response from the university were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
