In a recent announcement, TikTok revealed that it took down more than 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024 due to violations of its community guidelines. This action is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance its content moderation practices and foster a safer environment for its users.

According to the Community Guidelines Enforcement Report released on Tuesday, the removed videos account for less than 1 percent of all uploads in Nigeria during the specified period. Notably, the report indicated that 99.1 percent of these videos were identified and removed proactively before any user complaints were made, with an impressive 90.7 percent being taken down within 24 hours of detection. These statistics underscore TikTok’s commitment to effectively curb harmful content and ensure a secure experience for its Nigerian audience.

TikTok also emphasized its continued investment in advanced technologies aimed at improving content moderation and understanding potential risks, reflecting its dedication to transparency and platform safety for its diverse global user base, particularly in Nigeria.

On a global scale, TikTok reported that over 178 million videos were removed in June 2024, with 144 million of these actions facilitated by automated systems. The platform stated that its proactive detection rate has now reached 98.2 percent globally, signifying a notable improvement in its ability to address harmful content before it reaches users.

Owned by ByteDance, a private global company established by Chinese entrepreneurs, TikTok’s ownership structure includes 60 percent held by global institutional investors, with the remaining shares divided between its founders and employees, each holding 20 percent.
