Rio de Janeiro—President Bola Tinubu has landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20). His arrival occurred on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time (3:03 a.m. Nigerian time), where he was greeted by Ambassador Breno Costa of Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations.

Accompanying President Tinubu on this significant trip are several key officials, including Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development; and Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity. Additional members of his delegation include Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, and Amb. Mohammed Mohammed, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.

While at the summit, President Tinubu is also anticipated to engage in bilateral discussions focused on Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms, aiming to strengthen collaborative efforts with other nations.

The current G20 summit is being hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, who has held the rotating presidency of the group since December 21, 2023, and is set to conclude his tenure on November 30. This year’s summit, themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will emphasize three critical areas of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Topics on the agenda include addressing rising global temperatures and exploring aspects of the digital economy.

The Brazilian presidency will also prioritize discussions around the Israel-Hamas conflict and the escalating tensions between the United States and China. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the outcomes and agreements reached under the G20’s rotating presidency will be presented at this annual summit, where heads of state will finalize and approve the year’s negotiated agreements along with strategies for addressing global challenges.

NAN reports that the summit will be the culmination of extensive preparatory work throughout the year, including various ministerial meetings and engagement groups. The gathering will see participation from 19 member countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the UK, and the US.

In alignment with the summit’s theme, President da Silva has laid out a three-point agenda focused on combating hunger, poverty, and inequality. The G20 summit is scheduled to take place from November 18 to November 19.

President Tinubu’s invitation to attend this critical event was conveyed by Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Areias, during the ambassador’s presentation of his Letter of Credence on August 29. Areias emphasized that President da Silva eagerly looks forward to President Tinubu’s participation, reinforcing the Brazilian presidency’s commitment to food security as a key initiative aimed at eliminating extreme poverty by the year 2030.
