Edo State Governorship Election: UK Commends Peaceful Conduct, Urges Calm
The British High Commission has hailed Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State as largely peaceful, while calling for calm and urging parties to channel any grievances through established legal means. In a statement released on Wednesday, the commission praised the people of Edo State for their participation in the electoral process.
The commission commended the largely peaceful conduct of the elections and the voters of Edo State for their participation, noting that the outcome of the poll has been announced with the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, emerging victorious. Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 247,274 votes. Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata trailed behind with 22,763 votes.
The UK commission emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and encouraged parties with grievances over the election outcome to utilize established legal channels to address their concerns. It also stressed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities should handle all complaints with transparency and fairness.
“The electoral and legal processes exist to address any challenges or disputes, and we encourage the authorities, including INEC, to examine all concerns transparently and in good faith,” the commission said.
The British High Commission reiterated its commitment to supporting credible elections in Nigeria, assuring that it will continue to monitor the situation closely in Edo State.
