Cape Town, South Africa – Four officers of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been arrested for allegedly robbing a Nigerian rapper of jewellery valued at R20 million (approximately N1.9 billion).

The suspects, identified as Jacobus Groenewald, Bradley Minnaar, Mthuthuzeli Mafanya, and Bathandwa Soldati, are accused of breaking into the musician’s residence in Llandudno, Cape Town, on September 14, 2024, and stealing the valuable items.

The arrests were made by the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit, which accused the officers of staging a robbery at the Nigerian national’s home. The four suspects were brought before the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court last Thursday on charges of aggravated robbery.

A source from Cape Argus revealed that the officers were part of a larger group of eight who allegedly exploited their police uniforms and SAPS vehicles to target wealthy individuals in the affluent Llandudno area.

“They arrived at the Nigerian rapper’s home under the guise of searching for a wanted Nigerian individual but instead made off with luxury items, including Rolex watches, gold bracelets, emeralds, and ivory pieces,” the source disclosed.

The officers reportedly left behind incriminating evidence, including their fingerprints, which led to their identification. The source added that although the suspects worked at different SAPS stations, they allegedly formed a syndicate to carry out planned robberies.

The trial continues as the police officers face charges for their involvement in the robbery.
