Tyson Fury’s Potential Comeback Against Anthony Joshua Sparks Excitement in Boxing Community
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has suggested that Tyson Fury could be on the verge of participating in an extraordinary event if he decides to end his retirement to face Anthony Joshua in a much-anticipated British heavyweight bout. Currently, Fury is officially ‘retired’ after announcing on social media in January that he was stepping away from the ring, following his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch last December.
The Gypsy King has a history of briefly retiring, notably after his knockout victory over Dillian Whyte in April 2022, only to return to action against Derek Chisora later that year. This track record has led many in the boxing world to speculate about his possible return.
Joshua was present in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, where the heavyweight scene shifted following Agit Kabayel’s stoppage of Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker’s knockout of a last-minute replacement, Martin Bakole. Hearn commented to Sky Sports about Joshua’s excitement, stating, “The whole night got him very excited about coming back.”
Looking ahead, Hearn believes Joshua should first seek a rematch with Daniel Dubois, a fight he thinks Joshua desires as he aims for another shot at the heavyweight title. “We want to fight Tyson Fury, but we understand he’s retired at the moment. I hope he (Fury) watched tonight and felt a spark of excitement. If he comes back, it would certainly thrill fans, but if he chooses to stay retired, we wish him the best.”
Top Rank COO Brad Jacobs also weighed in on the subject, expressing his belief that Fury could be tempted out of retirement for a clash with Joshua, particularly given that both fighters are coming off defeats. Fury’s recent setbacks to Usyk prevented him from claiming the undisputed heavyweight championship, while Joshua suffered a knockout loss to Dubois at Wembley.
Jacobs stated, “Only Tyson knows what’s going through his mind. But I believe if the situation is right, an Anthony Joshua fight might be just the thing to bring him back.” He emphasized the unpredictable nature of Fury’s decisions, suggesting that fans shouldn’t be surprised by any turn of events.
Meanwhile, Dubois was scheduled to defend his IBF title against Parker before falling ill and being replaced by Bakole. Parker’s victory keeps him well-positioned for another title shot. Sky Sports Boxing’s Johnny Nelson speculated that a rematch between Joshua and Parker could be on the horizon, especially now that both fighters are active in the ring.
Nelson remarked, “If Parker wins tonight, watch out. Anthony Joshua will find an opponent, and it seems unlikely he’ll face Daniel Dubois anytime soon. Don’t be shocked if we see Joshua and Parker in the ring together again.”
As the heavyweight division continues to evolve, fans hold their breath, hoping for the high-stakes bouts they’ve long awaited.
