Trump’s Controversial Remarks on Immigrants Spark Backlash
During a radio interview on Monday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made controversial statements regarding illegal immigrants, claiming they are contributing “bad genes” to the United States. This remark reflects his ongoing provocative rhetoric about migrants, which he suggests are tainting the nation’s “blood.”
Trump criticized Democratic rival Vice President Kamala Harris while referencing government statistics that show numerous immigrants, including those with homicide convictions, are not in federal detention. “You know now, a murderer — I believe this — it’s in their genes. We’ve got a lot of bad genes in our country right now,” the former president told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.
The White House quickly denounced Trump’s remarks as “vile.” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described such language as “hateful, disgusting, inappropriate, and without a place in our country.” She emphasized that Trump’s comments echo previous offensive statements implying that migrants are poisoning the nation’s blood, which she labeled as “disturbing.”
Trump’s claims were based on data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in September, which covers several decades—including his own presidency—and does not account for individuals housed in state or local facilities.
The issue of illegal immigration is a significant topic ahead of the U.S. presidential election on November 5, 2024. It has been highlighted as a potential weakness for Harris, especially as border crossings peaked under President Joe Biden, her predecessor, by the end of 2023.
Despite the contentious environment, reports emerged on Monday showing that migrant apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border decreased by 75 percent year-on-year in September, reaching their lowest point since the Trump administration, according to statistics from the Department of Homeland Security.
Currently, Trump is polling closely with Harris in both national and swing-state surveys. Throughout his campaign, he has focused on vilifying both undocumented immigrants and those legally in the country. During a rally last month, the 78-year-old former reality TV star suggested that Harris should face prosecution for Biden’s border policies, referring to illegal immigrants as “animals” intent on “rape, pillage, thieve, plunder and kill.” He chillingly warned, “They will walk into your kitchen, they’ll cut your throat.”
