Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu received a phone call from U.S. President Joe Biden at around 4 p.m. Nigerian time on Monday, with discussions spanning a range of issues, including law enforcement collaboration and Africa’s representation on the United Nations Security Council.
According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who briefed State House correspondents on the development, the leaders addressed the recent release of Tigran Gambaryan, the Head of Finance Crime Compliance at Binance.
Tuggar shared that the two presidents discussed deepening the collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in areas related to law enforcement and security. Tinubu expressed gratitude for the partnership with the U.S. on security matters across Africa and West Africa, emphasizing the significance of continued cooperation.
President Biden, meanwhile, affirmed the importance of Africa in the global landscape, indicating the United States’ commitment to a sustainable partnership. He acknowledged that Africa’s future holds significance for the world and that enhancing U.S.-Africa relations is essential.
The leaders also deliberated on Africa’s representation in the United Nations Security Council. President Biden assured President Tinubu of the United States’ support for a permanent African seat on the Council, adding that Nigeria would be a logical candidate for one of those seats.
