Three staff members at a secondary school in northwestern Bosnia were killed on Wednesday when a co-worker opened fire during a school committee meeting, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred around 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT) at a school in Sanski Most, during Bosnia’s summer holiday period. Authorities say the suspected shooter, identified as the school’s caretaker, used an automatic rifle to carry out the attack before attempting to take his own life. He is currently hospitalized in critical condition in Banja Luka.

Adnan Beganovic, a police spokesperson for the region, confirmed the details during a press briefing but did not provide information regarding a possible motive. However, local media outlets suggest that the caretaker had recently been suspended from his duties, which may have led to the deadly confrontation.

The victims have been identified as the school’s dean, secretary, and an English teacher. The community is in shock as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police and emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, securing the area and providing aid to victims. Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and any underlying issues that may have contributed to the tragedy.

The attack has prompted discussions about workplace safety and mental health support within educational institutions across the country. Government officials and education authorities are expected to address the incident and propose measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
