Congo’s Coup Plot Exposed with 3 U.S. Citizens Facing Execution!
Congolese prosecutors have called for the death penalty against 50 individuals, including three American citizens, over their alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt earlier this year. The accused, among whom are U.S. citizens Marcel Malanga, Tyler Thompson Jr., and Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, face charges of terrorism, murder, and criminal association.
The trial, which began in June, centers on a botched coup led by opposition figure Christian Malanga. The operation resulted in the deaths of six people and ended with Malanga being fatally shot while resisting arrest. He had live-streamed the attack, drawing widespread attention.
Among the accused is 21-year-old Marcel Malanga, the son of Christian Malanga, and a U.S. citizen. His mother, Brittney Sawyer, insists her son is innocent, claiming he was unwittingly involved by following his father, who believed himself to be the president of a shadow government in exile.
Tyler Thompson Jr., also 21 and a college student from Utah, is another American on trial. Thompson’s family asserts that he was misled into the situation, believing he was on a vacation to Africa. They claim he had no knowledge of Malanga’s coup plans and had intended only to travel to South Africa and Eswatini.
The third American, 36-year-old Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, is linked to Malanga through a gold mining company they established in Mozambique in 2022.
The request for the death penalty comes as the Congolese government reinstates capital punishment, raising serious concerns among human rights advocates. The case has drawn international scrutiny, particularly over the fate of the three Americans who could face execution if convicted.
