Addressing journalists in Lagos, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, disclosed that the Command acted on actionable intelligence regarding the suspected importation of dangerous illicit drugs from a known source country.
Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has intercepted three containers containing Cannabis Sativa valued at N682 million.
The operation, carried out by the Tin-Can Island Port Command of the NCS, led to the seizure of specially grown Sativa Cannabis imported from Canada and the arrest of several suspects who are currently under investigation.
Addressing journalists in Lagos, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, disclosed that the Command acted on actionable intelligence regarding the suspected importation of dangerous illicit drugs from a known source country.
The containers, identified with numbers MSMU518030/2, MSMU602957/0, and FSCU927461/3, were intercepted, and a joint 100% physical examination conducted on August 2, 2024, revealed 77 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 38.5kg in one of the containers.
Nnadi added that subsequent examinations carried out on August 8, 2024, uncovered an additional 532 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 265.025kg and another 75 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 37.5kg in the other containers. No declaration had been entered for these consignments at the time of interception, and the shipping company involved was identified as Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
“In the coming weeks, it is our hope and desire to hand over several other containers of similar nature after consultations with Customs Headquarters,” Nnadi stated. “The Command, having received actionable intelligence, intercepted the three containers and handed them over to the NDLEA Tin-Can Island Port Command, in furtherance of existing interagency collaboration and the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the NDLEA and NCS.”
Nnadi further noted that investigations are ongoing, and the NDLEA will provide updates on the progress of interdictions, arrests, and prosecutions. He highlighted that the seizure included a total of 684 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 341.025kg, with an estimated street value of N682 million.
