Dr. Matawalle emphasized that while stationed in the North-West, the military leadership would oversee operations aimed at dismantling the network of notorious bandits, including the gang led by Bello Turji.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has instructed the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, along with key military chiefs, to relocate to Sokoto State as part of an intensified effort to address the escalating security challenges in the North-West, particularly the menace of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.
This directive was announced in a statement issued by Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence. The government’s decision underscores its unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security in the region, which has been severely affected by the activities of criminal elements.
Dr. Matawalle emphasized that while stationed in the North-West, the military leadership would oversee operations aimed at dismantling the network of notorious bandits, including the gang led by Bello Turji.
He highlighted a recent incident in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where bandits celebrated the discovery of a Nigerian military armored vehicle stuck in a waterlogged area.
To avoid an ambush, military officers were forced to withdraw, leaving the vehicle behind. This event, Matawalle noted, was unacceptable, especially considering the support provided by President Bola Tinubu to the Armed Forces.
“The Federal Government is deeply concerned about the persistent threat posed by banditry and terrorism in the North-West. We are ready to deploy all necessary assets to ensure that these criminal elements are flushed out and peace is restored to our communities,” Matawalle stated.
He further stressed the urgency of the situation, indicating that increased and sustained military operations would disrupt and weaken the bandits’ strongholds. Matawalle expressed confidence that his presence in the region would bolster the morale of the armed forces.
Assuring the residents of Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and the entire North-West region, Matawalle reiterated the government’s resolve to leave no stone unturned in the fight against insecurity. He called on local communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces.
“I will be on the ground in the North-West with the Chief of Defence Staff and other military chiefs, leading our brave men and women in uniform. The security and well-being of the people remain the government’s top priority,” the minister concluded.
