Umuahia, Nigeria – In a tragic incident on Sunday evening, gunmen ambushed the convoy of Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives, at Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State.
The attack, which occurred around 9 pm, led to the death of a police inspector and left another officer injured.
According to reports, the assailants, dressed in black and wearing police jackets, blocked the convoy, which comprised two policemen and a driver in a Toyota Corolla. The officers, identified as Inspector Dunna Jatau and Inspector Bala Mohammed, were attached to Onwusibe from the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 4, Makurdi. Fortunately, the lawmaker himself was not present in the convoy at the time of the attack.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday. She detailed that the attack occurred shortly after the officers had escorted Onwusibe to his destination in Umuahia. As the police vehicle neared the Umuahia South Local Government Area Secretariat in Ubakala, it was intercepted by gunmen in a Toyota Corolla with tinted windows.
Inspector Bala Mohammed was fatally shot, succumbing to multiple gunshot wounds, while Inspector Dunna Jatau and the driver narrowly escaped during the attack on police officers.
In response, officers from the Abia State Police Command conducted a thorough search of the area and deployed tactical teams to apprehend the suspects. “The Abia State Police Command is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice,” ASP Maureen Chinaka stated, emphasizing that an investigation is underway.
She urged the public to stay vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and remain calm as police efforts to track down the attackers continue. The authorities are appealing for cooperation from the community to ensure the swift apprehension of those responsible for the deadly ambush.
