Lagos Police Command have apprehended Chimereze Chinedu for allegedly defrauding a Thai national of $216,000 and N30 million.
The suspect reportedly promised to supply his victim with 37 tricycles valued at $216,000 but failed to deliver.
The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed the arrest on Tuesday through his X handle.
According to Hundeyin, Chinedu used forged letters from the State Criminal Investigation Department to deceive his victim into believing that the tricycles had been seized by the police. This ruse allowed Chinedu to extort an additional N30 million from the victim, purportedly to secure the release of the seized tricycles.
“Chimereze defrauded his victim under the pretence of selling 37 tricycles to her. He further expanded his fraudulent activity by forging letters from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lagos, showing that the tricycles were seized by the police and extorted N30 million from the victim to secure the release of the tricycles,” Hundeyin stated.
The suspect was arrested on May 10, 2024, in Enugu State following weeks of investigation and collaboration with the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL). Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices involved in the scam.
The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating internet fraud and ensuring justice for victims of such crimes.
